동시대의 소리를 듣는 일은 사운드아티스트에게 중요한 작업이다. 소리로 세상을 관찰하는 것이다. 일상에서 일어나는 수많은 사건들이 빚어내는 소리에 귀 기울여 세밀하게 청취해 내고 그 소리에 각인된 세상의 문제들을 청각으로 환원해 우리에게 다시 들려준다. 이러한 사운드아티스트의 작업은 우리가 감지하지 못했던 일상의 작은 일들이 실은 커다란 삶의 문제와 맞닿아 있음을 듣고 감각하게 해준다.

사운드아티스트 박소현의 작업은 바로 이러한 동시대의 소리를 듣는 일에서 출발한다. 사운드아트를 르포르타주의 방법론과 접목하여 삶의 현장에서 들리는 사실 그대로의 소리를 탐사, 취재하고 이를 청각으로 치환하여 기록, 재구성하는 작업을 펼친다. 문제적 소리 발원지를 찾아 수개월 간의 리서치, 현장 촬영과 녹음을 거듭하고 그로부터 얻어낸 소리 정보를 작가의 남다른 관찰력과 감각으로 추적한다.

<상승과 소멸>은 생활 속 작은 습관이 오늘날 환경 문제에 어떻게 연결되는지 그 탐사 과정과 결과를 소리로 기록해 낸 작업이다. 작가에 의해 ‘환경 르포’라는 명칭을 얻은 이 작업에서 박소현 작가는 일상 속에서 발견된 세 가지 상승 현상을 분석하고 상승 주체가 만들어지는 과정을 생태계 소멸 현상과 연결지어 다룬다. 상승의 욕망들이 결국 어떻게 소멸의 단계로 이르는지, 인류와 환경의 문제와 결합하여 풀어낸다. 이를테면 더 높은 곳으로 오르길 원하는 인간의 마음, 높은 위치에 올라선 것을 성공으로 인식하고 아래를 내려다 볼 수 있는 자유에서 해방감을 느끼는 인간의 모습 등을 주식장의 급등, 성적의 상승, 마천루, 산꼭대기, SNS의 좋아요 클릭수 등과 같은 상승의 이미지와 연결 짓는다. 동시에 그것을 해수면 상승, 높이 쌓인 쓰레기 탑, 자연 파괴, 기온 상승, 미세먼지 농도 상승과 같은 기후 위기의 상승 국면과 대치시켜 그로부터 발생하는 아이러니를 소리와 청각으로 역추적한다.

<상승과 소멸>은 ‘빙하 빌딩’, ‘커피 숲’, ‘좋아요 해양’을 세부 주제로 한다. 높고 멋있는 빌딩이 세워지면 우리는 그저 그 장소를 누리려 하지만 작가의 시선은 그 건설과정에서 얼마나 많은 자연 생태계가 파괴되는지에 가 닿는다. 123층 높이의 빌딩이 세워지기까지 어떤 일이 벌어지는지, 그것이 어떻게 빙하의 해빙과 해수면 상승으로 이어지는지, 철저한 리서치를 바탕으로 소리의 원료를 얻어내 작가의 창작을 결합하여 마치 영상을 역재생하듯 소리로 기록해 낸다. 그런가하면 커피 수요 상승이 어떻게 숲을 파괴하는지에 대해 날마다 분주한 프랜차이즈 카페의 소리 환경과 앰비언트 사운드를 대입해 풀어낸다. 또 우리가 SNS에서 습관적으로 누르는 좋아요 클릭과 일상이 되어버린 대량의 데이터 소비가 어떻게 해양 생태계 파괴로 이어지는지를 다양한 소리를 활용해 기록해 낸다. 이 소리 작업에서 박소현 작가는 때로는 가볍게 간과한 일들이, 또 일상의 작은 습관들이 오늘날 인류를 위협하는 거대한 문제들과 결국 연결되어 있음을 경청하고 숙고해 보도록 예리하면서도 따뜻하게 우리를 초대한다.

The work of sound artist Sohyeon Park starts with the task of listening to these contemporary sounds. Integrating sound art with journalistic methodology, she explores, investigates, records, and reconstructs the unaltered sounds found in real-life situations, using her acute observation and sensibility to trace the origins of problematic sounds.

"Rise and Disappearance" is a project that records and explores how small habits in daily life are connected to today's environmental issues. In this work, which Sohyeon Park refers to as "environmental reporting," she analyzes three instances of rising trends discovered in everyday life and connects them to ecological decline. She unravels how desires for ascension eventually lead to the stages of decline, merging issues concerning humanity and the environment. For instance, she draws connections between human aspirations to climb higher, the sense of success in reaching elevated positions, and the sense of liberation achieved by looking down from above with images of ascension like stock market surges, improving grades, skyscrapers, mountaintops, and the number of likes on social media. Simultaneously, she uses sound and auditory perception to trace back the ironies that arise when confronting rising climatic threats such as rising sea levels, towering garbage heaps, natural destruction, temperature increases, and increasing levels of air pollution.

"Rise and Disappearance" delves into specific topics like "Glacial Buildings," "Coffee Forests," and "Ocean of Likes." When tall and glamorous buildings are constructed, most of us simply appreciate the new spaces. However, the artist's perspective reaches the extent to which natural ecosystems are destroyed during the construction process. She meticulously documents, in the form of sound, the steps taken and events leading to the construction of a 123 high-rise building and how it correlates with glacial melting and rising sea levels, based on thorough research and a combination of raw sound materials and her creative work. Additionally, she delves into how the increasing demand for coffee is destroying forests, contrasting the bustling soundscapes of franchise coffee shops with ambient sounds to elucidate the impact. Furthermore, she employs a variety of sounds to record how the habitual clicking of the like button on social media and the massive consumption of data in our daily lives lead to the destruction of marine ecosystems. In this sonic work, Sohyeon Park invites us to attentively consider and reflect upon how often overlooked occurrences and small habits in our daily lives are ultimately linked to significant challenges threatening humanity today, doing so with a keen and warm invitation.
